What is the
new Normal?

A look back on this crazy year, with Mike Scothern (Harry Garlick Ltd)

It certainly has been a difficult and, at times, traumatic year; the Coronavirus Pandemic could well have changed the retail environment forever. If it wasn’t for the Government’s Furlough scheme, many a business would already be closed, including ours!

That said, we’re proud to say we pulled through, and hope to continue to provide our local customers with the service they are used to from Harry Garlick - with just a few tweaks in place to keep everyone safe!

Throughout Lockdown, our call centre remained open, with all store phone lines diverted, enabling us to continue taking orders and delivering throughout the local area. Even though we could only do doorstep deliveries, we managed to provide a lifeline to people who had faulty washing machines, fridges and more. Despite there being a national shortage of freezers of all kinds, we managed to just about keep everybody’s frozen food frozen!

Upon re-opening in June, we adhered to the Government guidelines and set about putting new systems in place, taking extra care to keep our sales staff, installers, and customers safe. We did this by operating a one in one out system, and we thank our customers for their patience. More than that, we thank them for their loyalty, because they really did come flooding back! We were incredibly busy in June and July, putting our installation team under immense pressure; but with hard work and long hours we have managed to look after everybody.

It’s the personal touch, the advice and the installation service that we are able to offer that makes all the difference - a difference that only your local independent retailer is really able to offer. We are part of your community, we give to local charities, we suspended rental payments for local businesses, and we want to remain part of the fabric of our towns for years to come; something we can only do with the support from our local councils and the community as a whole.
